Floridians along the Atlantic coast were coping Friday with rising water as Hurricane Matthew drenched the state with rain and as strong winds pushed waves over beaches. Meteorologists said storm surge was measured at more than 4 feet in some areas. “We are seeing impacts right now from St. Augustine to Jacksonville Beach. Unfortunately, this is going to continue through the night,” Gov. Rick Scott said. The storm, which is blamed for four deaths in Florida, sparked flash-flood concerns. The National Weather Service issued a warning for parts of Nassau County, north of Jacksonville. After killing hundreds in Haiti and other Caribbean nations, Matthew’s frightening power led to the deaths of four people in Florida. The list included a woman in her 60s in Volusia County, hit by a falling tree, and an 82-year-old man and a woman in St. Lucie County, officials said. The latter two had medical emergencies and responders were unable to reach them in time because of hazardous weather. A woman in northeast Florida died after a tree fell on her camper trailer, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office said. Hurricane Matthew churned along Florida’s Atlantic Coast on Friday, its center remaining just offshore as the storm battered the state with punishing rain, beach-swallowing sea surges and destructive wind gusts topping 100 mph. By late Friday afternoon, the strongest hurricane to menace the United States in a decade had weakened to a Category 2 storm, and it was clear that Florida had dodged some of the worst-case scenarios laid out by forecasters and public officials. Yet the danger wasn’t past: South Carolina was bracing for the storm’s potential landfall there Saturday, and even residents in North Carolina faced a considerable threat. Late Friday night, the hurricane center said “strong winds and storm surge” were also spreading north along the coasts of Georgia and South Carolina and warned of “rising water levels” expected in both states into early Saturday morning. At least four deaths in the state were linked to the storm Friday, officials said. Two were medical emergencies that ambulances couldn’t reach and two were women killed by falling trees. One of these women was trying to “ride out the storm” in a camper trailer about halfway between Jacksonville and Orlando when a tree was knocked onto the camper, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office said. More than 1.1 million people in Florida lacked power by Friday night, according to the office of Gov. Rick Scott.

Hurricane Matthew toll

in Haiti rises

to 1,000, dead

buried in mass graves

We cannot ignore this

crisis that has already

claimed 1,000 lives

in just a week

Haiti started burying some of its dead in mass graves in the wake of Hurricane Matthew, a government official said on Sunday, as cholera spread in the devastated southwest and the death toll from the storm rose to 1,000 people. The powerful hurricane, the fiercest Caribbean storm in nearly a decade, slammed into Haiti on Tuesday with 145 mile-per-hour (233 kph) winds and torrential rains that left 1.4 million people in need of humanitarian assistance, the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said. A Reuters tally of numbers from local officials showed that 1,000 people were killed by the storm in Haiti, which has a population of about 10 million and is the poorest country in the Americas. The official death toll from the central civil protection agency is 336, a slower count because officials must visit each village to confirm the numbers. 522 people were killed in Grand’Anse alone. A tally of deaths reported by mayors from 15 of 18 municipalities in Sud Department on the south side of the peninsula showed 386 people there. In the rest of the country, 92 people were killed, the same tally showed. Cholera causes severe diarrhea and can kill within hours if untreated. It is spread through contaminated water and has a short incubation period, which leads to rapid outbreaks. Hurricane Matthew has now killed 1,000 people in the Caribbean island of Haiti, and 1.4 million people are in need of emergency huminatarian aid. It’s not just killed hundreds, destroyed homes and ruined livelihoods. The disaster has also contaminated water sources, bringing about an outbreak of the deadly disease cholera. This crisis can simply not be ignored. Torrential rain and 145mph winds brought Haiti to its knees last week and sparked a humanitarian disaster. The United Nations has launched a $120 million (£97.5 million) flash appeal to the international community to cover Haiti’s needs over three months. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said: ‘A massive response is required.’ Animals have been killed along with crops and food reserves, and 300 schools have been damaged in the poor Caribbean nation. Hospitals and local communities are in desperate need of supplies, but the hurricane ripped through Haiti’s roads and communications systems, delaying the aid. The bodies of the dead are being buried in mass graves because they are starting to decompose, said Kedner Frenel, the most senior central government official in the Grand’Anse region. He said authorities were left with no other option. In Grand’Anse, 522 people were killed, with 480 known victims across the rest of the island, Frenel said. The tropical storm has led to mass contamination of water sources and an outbreak of cholera, which causes severe diarrhoea and can kill within hours without treatment.

Many times it is difficult to tell whether a trough will allow the tropical cyclone to recurve back out to sea (for those folks on the eastern edges of continents) or whether the tropical cyclone will continue straight ahead and make landfall”.

Hurricane Matthew

Avoids Direct Hit

Hurricane Matthew cruised the Florida coast Friday, lashing evacuated communities, flooding St. Augustine and Jacksonville, and knocking out power to 1.1 million people. But in its unusual journey north, the storm never quite managed to make landfall, staying just off the coast as if surveying beachfront property. Matthew so far has been less lethal and destructive than forecasters had feared it would be — although the full extent of damage could take days to assess. Insurance companies had speculated that losses could total in the tens of billions of dollars, on the scale of Hurricane Andrew in 1992, and the National Weather Service had warned that damage could make some places “uninhabitable for weeks or months.” That looked less likely by Friday as the storm was downgraded to Category 2 and sustained maximum winds dropped to 105 mph as of 11 p.m. Still, officials remained cautious, focusing on the threat from the storm surge as Matthew blows massive amounts of the Atlantic Ocean across sea walls, up rivers and through the dune line. Hurricane Matthew churned north along the coast of Florida on Friday, staying far enough offshore to spare the state a direct hit, but still caused flooding, wind damage and power failures. By Friday evening, it was a Category 2 storm, with sustained winds of up to 110 miles per hour, and government officials and forecasters shifted their focus to the threat of more serious damage on Saturday as the storm approaches Savannah and Charleston. The storm was blamed for the deaths of more than 800 people in Haiti, according to a Reuters report based on information from civil protection and local officials. For much of the day, officials warned that Jacksonville could suffer the worst damage. But while there was flooding in the area, the eye of the storm remained about 40 miles offshore as it passed Jacksonville.

Friday is a dangerous day in Florida as Hurricane Matthew churns up the coast. Central and Northern Florida have not seen a storm of this power in living memory, and one person has already been reported dead. It would be a mistake to underestimate the danger that remains with this storm. But this day has not yet gone as bad as it could have, based on the storm’s power and projected course Thursday afternoon. Matthew weakened somewhat overnight from a Category 4 hurricane with 140 mph winds to a Category 3 with 120 mph winds. And it “wobbled” such that its eye wall, which contains its most intense winds, has remained just off shore all day, not making landfall or yet pushing a worst-case storm surge over land. Here’s why. The strongest part of a hurricane is its eye wall — the vortex of winds around the eye, inside which is a round patch of calm air. As Weather Channel hurricane specialist Bryan Norcross explained in an extended Facebook post, sometimes a second eye wall forms around the first, which then dies, and replaces it. At that point the storm often carries on as before. But the process, he says, is difficult to forecast. This happened overnight with Hurricane Matthew, but it happened in a somewhat unusual way. “The old, internal eyewall got off center,” he writes, “wobbling around inside the large, developing bigger donut. Like a top that gets knocked while it’s spinning, that had the effect of yanking the storm to the [east] just enough to keep the center off the Florida coast.”  The process completed Friday morning, and Matthew has hugged the coast all day without its eye making landfall. Without a landfall, much of Florida has thus far been spared a worst-case scenario impact. But that doesn’t mean things can’t get worse. The outer eye wall of the storm passed over Daytona Beach Friday, delivering 100 mph winds and causing some debris to fly through the air. And another inland wobble is still possible — there’s a long way yet for the storm to go. Hurricane Matthew — the most powerful storm to threaten the U.S. in more than a decade — has finally made landfall in the United States. After sweeping through the Caribbean and leaving a path of devastation in Haiti and the Bahamas, Matthew had been bordering the United States’ East Coast. On Friday, its 115 mph winds and 12 ft. storm surges left hundreds of thousands in the Sunshine State without power and killed at least six. Now downgraded to a Category 1 hurricane by the National Hurricane Center, the storm touched down in South Carolina late Saturday morning were it brought 85 mph winds and up to 7 ft. storm surges. Forecasters predict up to 15 inches of rain, which when combined with the coastal water could cause life-threatening inland flooding, CNN reports. Matthew’s center crossed between Charleston and Myrtle Beach just before 11 a.m. ET, the National Hurricane Center said — flattening trees and hitting the state’s historic buildings. They predict places like Savannah, Georgia; Charleston, South Carolina; and Wilmington, North Carolina could be hit the hardest. Officials in South Carolina prepped their residents for the Matthew — evacuating homes and declaring a state of emergency. About a quarter of the state’s residents — about 1.1 million people — from nearly 100 miles from its coastal shorelines fled beginning at 3 p.m. on Wednesday. One hundred miles of I-26 East was be reversed, allowing South Carolina residents to exit — but not return. Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina did the same — though luckily, Florida and Georgia were sparred what experts said could have been catastrophic damage, ABC News reports.

Hurricane Matthew

makes landfall

in South Carolina

as Category 1

Hurricane Matthew made landfall late Saturday morning southeast of McClellanville, South Carolina, between Charleston and Myrtle Beach, the National Hurricane Center said. By 11 a.m. ET, the storm’s center — with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph — was about 55 miles south-southwest of Myrtle Beach, moving northeast at 12 mph.
fox8.com – Updated at 02:33pm,

Matthew, a storm that left destruction and killed hundreds in the Caribbean and at least four people in Florida, continued its trek up the southeastern US coast with 75 mph winds at the center around 10 a.m. ET — 30 mph slower than just hours earlier. Part of the storm’s eyewall — the hurricane’s strongest section — passed over parts of coastal Georgia and South Carolina on Saturday morning, as the storm flooded low-lying areas, downed trees, made roads impassable, and cut power for hundreds of thousands. Flooding will still be a major concern for South Carolina and North Carolina, with high storm surges expected along the coast. Heavy rainfall — with up to 15 inches of rain are possible near and east of Interstate 95, the National Hurricane Center says — also is expected to cause flooding inland. That would be “a flash-flood event on (even) a normal day,” CNN meteorologist Chad Myers said. “This has the potential for the worst flooding since Hurricane Floyd,” N.C. Gov. Pat McCrory said during a Saturday morning news conference. Floyd, a Category 2 storm, hit North Carolina hard in 1999. Matthew left more than 430,000 people without power in South Carolina and 100 roads impassable in the Charleston area Saturday morning, and damage assessments had yet to be completed in a large portion of the state officials said. South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, who’d warned coastal residents to evacuate ahead of the storm, asked them to stay away a while longer Saturday morning. Matthew battered the coast of east-central and northeastern Florida on Saturday, leaving four people dead and swaths of damage.

A visible image showing Matthew and Nicole on Oct. 6 at 7:45 a.m. EDT was captured by NOAA’s GOES-East satellite. The image shows large Hurricane Matthew stretching from eastern Cuba and Hispaniola, over the Bahamas and extending to Florida. Matthew is west of the much smaller Tropical Storm Nicole. Nicole was about 400 miles south of Bermuda and although approaching hurricane strength, no eye was yet visible.     nasa.gov/feature/goddard/2016/nicole-atlantic-ocean Oct. 14, 2016
