The April 15, 2016 M 7.0 earthquake north of Kumamoto, on the island of Kyushu in southwest Japan, occurred as the result of strike-slip faulting at shallow depth.
The April 15, 2016, M 7.0 event (UTC 16:25:06) occurred one day after a series of foreshocks in the same region, which included M 6.2 and M 6.0 earthquakes. The April 14 events resulted in at least 9 fatalities and over 800 injuries.

Saturday’s magnitude-7.3 quake struck at 01:25 (15:25 GMT on Friday) close to the city of Kumamoto, which had been hit by a magnitude-6.4 quake on Thursday night. Both quakes were shallow, causing huge damage to roads, bridges and tunnels. Big landslides cut off remote mountain villages.  The earthquakes are the biggest to have hit Japan since 2011 when a 9.0 magnitude quake caused a huge tsunami, leaving more then 19,000 dead and missing. Japan is regularly hit by earthquakes but strict building codes mean they usually cause minimal damage.        bbc.com – Monday 18 April 2016

Saturday’s magnitude-7.3 quake struck at 01:25 (15:25 GMT on Friday) at a depth of 10km (six miles) closet to the city of Kumamoto, which had already been hit by a magnitude-6.4 quake on Thursday night. Nearly 2,000 people received hospital treatment. About 190 of the injured are in a serious condition, the government said. There are many reports of people trapped inside buildings. Damage has been extensive – this road collapse was in Minami-Aso.     bbc.com – Monday 18 April 2016

The April 16, 2016 M 7.8 earthquake, offshore of the west coast of northern Ecuador, occurred as the result of shallow thrust faulting on or near the plate boundary between the Nazca and South America plates. At the location of the earthquake, the Nazca plate subducts eastward beneath the South America plate at a velocity of 61 mm/yr.
Ecuador has a history of large subduction zone related earthquakes. Seven magnitude 7 or greater earthquakes have occurred within 250 km of this event since 1900. On May 14th, 1942, a M 7.8 earthquake occurred 43 km south of this April 16th, 2016 event. On January 31st, 1906 a M 8.3 earthquake (reportedly as large as M 8.8 in some sources) nucleated on the subduction zone interface 90 km to the northeast of the April 2016 event, and ruptured over a length of approximately 400-500 km, resulting in a damaging tsunami that caused in the region of 500-1,500 fatalities. The April 2016 earthquake is at the southern end of the approximate rupture area of the 1906 event. A shallow, upper crustal M 7.2 earthquake 240 km east of the April 2016 event on March 6th, 1987 resulted in approximately 1,000 fatalities.

The earthquake shattered vital infrastructure. Thousands of people were left homeless, making them vulnerable to dirty drinking water and disease.  The cost of rebuilding is likely to be in the billions of dollars, President Rafael Correa said during a visit to the worst-affected region. Six survivors were pulled from the rubble of a hotel near the town of Manta but despite the efforts of emergency teams hope is fading that others will be found. The smell of rotting bodies is filling the air in the worst-hit areas, witnesses said.    bbc.com – 20 April 2016

‘Unprecedented’: 5 Dead as Record Rainfall

Floods Houston

At least 5 dead,

hundreds rescued from

high water in Houston

flooding

Record rains trigger ‘unprecedented’ flash floods in Houston, Texas 3:32 More than a foot of rain deluged parts of Houston on Monday, leaving five dead as surging waters flooded homes and highways for thousands of residents who were warned to stay inside. Gov. Greg Abbott declared a state of disaster in nine counties, hundreds of flights were canceled, mass transit was shut down and schools were closed after a season’s worth of rain fell in just a matter of hours. Almost 17 inches of rain had inundated the city by 2 p.m. ET.  Bush Intercontinental Airport grappled with nearly 650 flight cancellations and more than 1,100 delays. METRO Houston also suspended all rail and bus services, as swaths of the city and nearby Waller County were walloped with 16.8 inches of rain before noon, according to the National Weather Service. Harris County’s chief administrator, judge Ed Emmett, signed an emergency declaration for the county, saying more than 1,000 homes had already been flooded, and city and county authorities had responded to more than 1,500 flooding emergencies.  Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner closed all city buildings and canceled the State of the City address that had been scheduled for Monday.  “This is an unprecedented amount of rain,” Turner said. “It’s been stubborn, and it’s not moving anytime fast.”

At least five people have been killed in flooding that has covered the Houston region, officials said Monday, forcing the evacuation of hundreds of people and knocking out power to thousands of homes and businesses. “This is a life-threatening emergency,” the city said on an emergency website. “Houston residents should avoid travel at all costs today.”  Four of the deaths happened in hard-hit Harris County, officials said. The driver of an 18-wheeler was found dead inside the cab after he drove into high waters, a Harris County constable reported, and another man was found dead in a submerged car, the Houston Fire Department said. Two others were found dead after driving around a barricade on Houston’s west side, Harris County Judge Ed Emmett said. In neighboring Waller County, a 56-year-old man was found dead in a submerged vehicle, County Judge Trey Duhon said. “It is believed the car rode off the road and into a ditch,” Duhon said.
