Nepal Annapurna: Trekking disaster

toll reaches 39

BBC – 18 October 2014

Snowstorms and avalanches have killed 39 trekkers on a popular hiking route in the Himalayas, Nepali officials say. After a fourth day of searches, 384 people have been rescued from the Annapurna trail, 216 of them foreigners, in the country’s worst-ever trekking disaster. Helicopters have been searching parts of the trail high as 5,790m (19,000ft) for survivors. The government said the priority was to rescue 22 stranded hikers. The trekkers are stranded at Thorung La pass, and face a shortage of food and water. Army helicopters tried to rescue them but failed after being unable to land. Nepalese, Japanese, Israeli, Canadian, Indian, Slovak, Vietnamese and Polish trekkers are said to be among the dead.

(Reuters) – The death toll in a blizzard that engulfed trekkers on a popular hiking route in Nepal rose by nine on Saturday to 39, as a helicopter search spotted more bodies stranded in the rugged, snow-covered Himalayan terrain. Sixty more people were rescued from the Annapurna trail, a three-week route popular with foreign adventure tourists that circles the world’s tenth-tallest mountain, bringing the total saved to 371. Dozens more were still missing. Twelve helicopters were pressed on Saturday into action to drop searchers in otherwise inaccessible spots, and soldiers fanned out in different directions along the 240-km (150-mile) route. It was the most intensive effort yet to find survivors of one of the country’s worst mountain disasters, which struck at a time of year when the weather is usually calm and clear. Nepal is home to eight of the world’s 14 highest mountains. Income from tourism, including permit fees from trekkers, who made up more than 12 percent of its 800,000 tourists in 2013, accounts for 4 percent of its economy.

What is the Annapurna Circuit?

  • Roughly 241km (150 miles), takes around three weeks to complete
  • Described as “the best long distance trek in the world”
  • Known as the “apple pie” circuit due to the baked goods offered by tea houses along the route
  • Ascends to 5,416m (17,776ft) at the Thorung La Pass
  • Opened to tourists in 1977 after conflicts between guerrillas and the Nepalese army were resolved
  • Circuit passes Mount Annapurna, world’s 10th highest mountain and one of the most dangerous

Nepal Annapurna: Search ends for surviving trekkers.  Rescue teams in Nepal say that there are now no trekkers left stranded after completing their search for survivors of a devastating Himalayan storm. The focus now is on recovering bodies buried in the snow, a government spokesman told the BBC. It is unclear how many people may still be missing in the country’s worst-ever trekking disaster. At least 39 people are known to have died, and nearly 400 people have been rescued from the Annapurna trail. A rescue helicopter spotted nine more bodies Saturday on a trekking trail in northern Nepal, bringing the death toll to 38 from this week’s series of snow storms and avalanches in the worst hiking disaster in the Himalayan nation. Yadav Koirala from the Disaster Management Division in Katmandu, said, the bodies were seen from the air in Dolpa district, but the steep terrain made it impossible for the helicopter to land. The helicopter picked up three survivors and rescuers on foot would be sent to the area to retrieve the bodies. Government administrator Yama Bahadur Chokhyal said, while more than 300 people have been rescued, sometimes plucked from mountainsides by helicopters and taken to nearby villages and towns, dozens more are still taking shelter in isolated mountain huts. The death toll was likely to increase as officials reach other parts of the trail where the trekkers were caught by the deadly blizzard. About 70 people are still missing along or near the popular Annapurna trail, according to the Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal, and the death toll is expected to rise. The route, 100 miles north-west of the capital, Katmandu, was filled with international hikers during the peak October trekking season, when the air is generally clear and cool. There were also many Nepalese people on the trails because of local festivals. belfasttelegraph.co.uk / 16 October 2014

Trekkers battling a Himalayan blizzard were left helpless after porters fainted from the cold, a survivor of one of Nepal’s worst mountain disasters said on Friday, as rescue teams resumed a hunt for 10 missing hikers and the death toll reached 29. The dead included trekkers from Canada, India, Israel and Poland, as well as Nepali guides and herders, drawn by the peak hiking season only to fall victim to unexpected avalanches and blizzards brought by a cyclone in India. A village in Manang is seen covered in snow after storm Tuesday. Based on the latest report out of Kathmandu, 85 of the 345 trekkers who registered at a checkpoint Monday en route to the two closest camps before the pass — Yak Kharka and Thorung Phedi — had not made it to the other side. About 100 trekkers were said to have left the final base camp, also known as High Camp, which provides food and accommodation the night before trekkers begin a sharp, three-hour ascent of about 700 meters to cross the pass.  Washington Post – Friday, October 17, 2014  –  ( Photo Courtesy of Simrik Air )
